Family Neujahr

Pilot project supports returnees when moving to the region

Since three months family Neujahr has been living in their own house in Großröhrsdorf and has already arrived correctly. The furniture has all found its place in the house, the neighbors meet regularly for a chat at the garden fence and the three-year-old twins and the one-year-old girl have found playmates without any problems. For Melanie and Torsten Neujahr a wish was fulfilled, that had little chances of success in their previous home.

For four years they had been looking for a suitable house in and around their home town of Villingen-Schwenningen, in which there was also enough space for the children. “But the properties are overpriced and barely affordable”, Melanie Neujahr said. The 35-year-old comes from Radeberg and moved to the Black Forest with her mother at the age of nine. But part of her family - her half-sister, grandma and grandpa, aunt - still lives in East Saxony. The New Year family often came here to visit and the idea matured to look for a house in their old homeland. In fact, they found what they were looking for in Großröhrsdorf, among others. Thanks to the support offered by the project “Wachstumsregion Dresden” during the change of location, the decision was made quickly and finally to Großröhrsdorf as a place of residence.

The pilot project was launched a year and a half ago by various cooperation partners. The cities of Kamenz, Pulsnitz, Radeberg and Großröhrsdorf have been there from the start. The aim is to help people return and move to the region, to work more closely with regional companies and to strengthen the entire region with positive news. For the Neujahr family, the project turned out to be a helpful contact point. A permanent advisor accompanied them, organized discussions with the bank and the employment office, right through to applications and registrations for day-care centers, electricity and garbage collection on site. This made it possible to deal with the authorities much faster and there was more time for the actual move.

In Villingen-Schwenningen both parents worked as geriatric nurses. Only on site was Torsten Neujahr able to apply intensively in his new home. After several job interviews, he was able to resume nursing. Melanie Neujahr will be on parental leave until the end of the year and if the youngest also goes to kindergarten, she will definitely have to work again.

The New Year family feels at home in their new home. “We are particularly enthusiastic about the region due to the friendly nature and open-mindedness of the residents”, Melanie Neujahr confirmed to Mayor Kerstin Ternes during a visit to the town hall. The project “Wachstumsregion Dresden” definitely made the big step of the New Year easier. Other families, couples or commuters should benefit from this in the future.
